Hot water cylinders come in a range of shapes and styles, but most are simple, insulated tanks designed to store and heat your hot water. They can have a built‑in hard insulation jacket, a foam outer layer, or in older systems, no insulation at all.

There are two main types:

• Unvented (mains pressure) cylinders — fed directly from the mains, giving strong, consistent pressure.

​

• Vented (gravity-fed) cylinders — supplied from a loft tank and rely on gravity for pressure.

​

Whichever type you have, the job of the cylinder is the same: to heat and store hot water so you can enjoy reliable showers, baths, and hot taps throughout the day.

Older cylinders often suffer from limescale build‑up, which reduces both their capacity and efficiency. This means slower reheating times, less available hot water, and higher energy costs.
